Parklawn Dive
Parklawn has invited DT pool members to participate in their 2021 Dive Team. Review the following information for all the details on this fun opportunity.
The Parklawn Piranhas Dive Team is gearing up for Summer 2021! We’re looking forward to our first full season of dive (caveat: we still have some COVID-related unknowns). Registration is now open! Quick facts:
How to Register:https://www.parklawnpool.org/dive-team/dive-team-registration/ -- please read REGISTRATION section below first.
Who Can Register: All divers can sign up now. No diving experience necessary but a diver must be able to swim independently to the side of the pool after his/her dive.
Schedule: June 1-July 25, will include Mon-Fri practices, five Tuesday NVSL meets and divisionals (a Sunday) plus an optional Sunday meet or two. Practice times are still being worked out and depend on registrations -- see PRACTICES & COVID CONCERNS below. Full schedule will be on TeamSnap; check for meet schedule on NVSL site: https://dive.mynvsl.com/schedules?year=2021&div=8&date=
Coaching: Coach Tom Blakeman is returning. Assistant Coach TBD.
Cost: $125 (one child) / $225 (two children) / $325 (three children) / $425 (four or more children)
If you’re interested, please register your child this month. We need to know the team size ASAP in order to finalize the practice schedule, coaching needs, and T-shirt/cap order. Priority will be given to 2020 team members. Of course, much depends on COVID restrictions by the government, NVSL and the Pool Board--we don’t know what June will look like.
PRACTICES & COVID CONCERNS
We may have up to 8 divers per diving board per practice, which means practices may run for at least 3-4 hours to accommodate the number of divers we are expecting. Logistically, we won’t be able to maintain social distancing in the dive areas and our coaches and parent volunteers will not be enforcing it. Depending on COVID restrictions, parents might not be in the pool area watching our morning practices. The dive and swim teams will be practicing at the same time so it’s possible that there will be 50-75 swimmers/divers in the pool or pool area. However, between our coaches and parent liaisons, we will have enough adult supervision. We need to minimize the risk of any break-out among the team, which could require us to shut down practice and possibly forfeit a meet! Please only register if you are comfortable with these plans!
We will have evening practices from 4:30 to 8:30 pm (Mon - Fri) between June 1 and June 11; starting June 14, practices will be from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (Mon - Fri). There’ll be no evening practices after June 11, except for a limited evening practice on June 15-17 just for divers who attend Alexandria and Arlington schools (which will still be in session). Please indicate on the registration form whether you will need to attend evening practice on June 15-17. Because of the complexity of the scheduling this year, we will likely assign specific practice times to each diver, and will not be able to handle requests to change times from week to week or day to day.
SNACK BAR
Dive families need to do three shifts at the Snack Bar as it’s how we help financially support our Piranhas. If you also have kids on the swim team you have a total of four Snack Bar shifts. For families who don’t want to volunteer, can’t volunteer for work, family and personal reasons, or are not comfortable volunteering for COVID-19-related reasons, we have an opt-out fee of $150. No explanation is needed for why your family opted-out; we respect your family’s decision. If you need a payment plan for the opt-out fee, please contact our Team Treasurer, Caroline Molina ([email protected]).
REGISTRATION
Divers must complete ALL THREE registration steps by Sunday, May 16, to attend dive-team practice. Just like any other sport or activity, you must satisfy registration requirements before your diver can attend practice. No exceptions. Registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to returning 2020 dive-team members until April 30. Registration for new and returning families closes no later than Sunday, May 16. We need to close registration early to plan the practice times given that we likely will have some restrictions. Please register by doing the following three steps:
- Registering and signing the participation waiver atwww.parklawnpool.org/piranhas-swim-team/piranhas-join/. The NVSL requires a signed participation and COVID waiver from each diver. We also require you to adhere to our Parklawn Piranhas Code of Conduct, which we will make available before our first practice.
- Paying your dive team fee by check made to “Parklawn Swim Team” and mailing it to Parklawn Dive Team c/o Caroline Molina, 6214 Woodland Lake Drive, Alexandria, VA 22310 or by paying viaparklawnpiranhas.square.site/. If your family needs a payment plan, please reach out to our Team Treasurer, Carolina Molina ([email protected]).
